Privacy Policy

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit respects your privacy. This policy explains what information this website collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.

In brief

We do not sell your information, and we do not collect personal information about you unless you choose to provide it. We gather standard, non-identifying usage data to keep the site secure and to help us improve it.

This policy applies to this public website. It does not apply to the Court's electronic case filing system (CM/ECF), PACER, or other systems, which are governed by their own terms and by the federal judiciary's privacy policies.

Information collected automatically

When you visit this site, our web servers automatically record certain technical information sent by your browser. We use this information only in aggregate, to measure the number of visitors, to diagnose problems, and to maintain the security and performance of the site. This information includes:

  • The Internet domain and IP address from which you access the site;
  • The type of browser and operating system you use;
  • The date and time of your visit;
  • The pages you view and the files you download;
  • The address of the website that referred you to us, if any.

We make no attempt to identify individual visitors from this information, and we do not associate it with any personal data. Raw logs are retained only as long as needed for security and operational purposes.

Cookies

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device. This site uses only session cookies necessary for the site to function—for example, to remember display preferences during your visit. These cookies expire when you close your browser and do not track you across other websites.

You may set your browser to refuse cookies or to alert you when a cookie is offered. Most of the site will continue to work if you decline cookies, though some conveniences may be unavailable.

Information you choose to provide

Some pages let you send us information—for example, an email inquiry, a form submission, or a request for accommodation. We use the information you provide only to respond to your request and for the purpose for which you provided it. We do not create individual profiles or share this information except as described below.

Please do not send sensitive personal information—such as Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, or dates of birth—by email. Email is not a secure means of communication. Case-related filings must be made through the Court's official filing channels, not by email.

How information is used and shared

We do not sell, rent, or trade information collected on this site. We may share information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Security. To protect the site and its users, and to investigate suspected unauthorized attempts to access, alter, or damage the site.
  • Legal requirements. Where disclosure is required by law, court order, or the rules governing the federal judiciary.
  • Service providers. With contractors who operate the site on the Court's behalf, and only to the extent needed to perform that work.

Security

This site is maintained on behalf of the United States Government. For site security, and to ensure that this service remains available to all users, we employ software to monitor traffic and to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage. Unauthorized attempts to interfere with the operation of this site are strictly prohibited and may be punishable under federal law.

This website contains links to other websites, including other federal courts, government agencies, and outside organizations. The Court is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of sites we do not operate. When you follow a link away from this site, we encourage you to review the privacy policy of the site you visit.

Children's privacy

This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
